What is RoHS?
Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (ROHS) became European Law in 2003. RoHS restricts the use of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), hexavalent chromium (Cr6+), polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) in electronic equipment. These materials are also restricted per the China RoHS regulations. In 2007 China’s RoHS regulations became law, this includes the same substances but the rules for compliance are different.
What is WEEE?
Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE) is the European Community directive on waste electrical and electronic equipment which, together with the RoHS Directive, became European Law in 2003, setting collection, recycling and recovery targets for all types of electrical goods. The scope is to prevent the generation of electrical and electronic waste and to promote reuse, recycling and other forms of recovery in order to reduce the quantity of such waste to be eliminated, whilst also improving.
What is REACH?
REACH is a European Community Regulation on chemicals and their safe use (EC 1907/2006). It deals with the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemical substances. The new law entered into force on 1 June 2007. The aim of REACH is to improve the protection of human health and the environment through the better and earlier identification of the intrinsic properties of chemical substances. At the same time, innovative capability and competitiveness of the EU chemicals industry should be enhanced. The benefits of the REACH system will come gradually, as more and more substances are phased into REACH.
